DVD Information

DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc, originally it was Digital Video Disk but the name was changed to widen the appeal with the use a DVD ROM. DVD discs are 12cm / 8cm (5" / 3") in diameter which is the same as CD, the difference is that narrower tracks are used on DVDs to allow more data to be stored in the same surface area, mastered DVDs come in 4 types, see the table below.

DVD Disc capacity is quoted as if 1 GB is 1000 MB, actually 1 GB is 1024 MB, therefore a single layer DVD R disc can contain approximately 4.38 GB of actual data (4,700,000,000 bytes).

Generally DVD R discs are single sided although double sided discs do exist.
